Teething?

Today Janie fell off the jungle bars "into a starfish" or in other words falling flat down all spread out. Poor thing hurt her little hand so we went and bought some princess bandaids.
I had to ask, "If Princess Ariel had a cut, what kind of bandaid would she use?"
"Hmmmm. Janie and Jack bandaids."
Well, that makes sense.

I love kids for how they make me laugh. With Janie, she tells me all sorts of things. Like, she's going to grow up and marry Jack and we will all live in this house. And she will have 14 babies, all with stomas. 7 boys and 7 girls. And we will need a bigger van to fit all the car seats. And she, grandma, and I will all breastfeed them since we will need more boobies.

With Jack, I use him as my little puppet. I take his hand and mimic him scratching his front. "Yep, yep, yep."

Or I will sing the song from the hotel commercial but with Jack's new words.
"I've been everywhere man. I've been everywhere man.
I've been to the kitchen, bathroom, living room, dining room, backyard, bedroom.
I've been everywhere man. I've been everywhere man.
I've been to NICU, surgery, EKG, recovery, safeway, walgreens, Lowes and Berkeley.
I've been everywhere."

It's just fun little things to do with baby. He loves the attention, no matter what it is.

Today Jack slept for only 2 1-hour naps. I truly do not understand this baby's sleeping habits. Babies are supposed to sleep so much more. He also doesn't eat much. His feedings are quickly over. Maybe 5 or less minutes per breast. That's all he's interested in before he starts fighting, arching his back and getting mad. It's not gas, I burp him. I've been wondering if he's teething. It's very early, but he constantly has his fist in his mouth, knawing on it. Jamie was born with her bottom two teeth (called neonatal teeth), so he may be early but that may just be what it is.

I offered him a bottle of formula today because I've been worrying about my supply diminishing. I know it has because he doesn't eat much, so he's not keeping me in milk. I don't leak and I don't get engorged. Instead of drinking the bottle, he chewed on the nipple.

I'm watching him. I worry. I can't help it.

Breasts get used to having milk on board- a friend of mine never went through initial engorgement, but has breastfed just fine. Also, my son is not an eat for joy kind of kid- he eats quickly and moves on, but is getting sufficient milk. Although you should do what you think is right, if you are worried about his intake you might try to take him to see a lactation consultant who has a baby scale, and can weigh him before and after a feed and let you know how much he's eating and if that's enough. Sometimes they are just efficient little vaccuums. I had trouble with low supply, and one of the pieces of advice I got frequently was that supplementing with formula can lead to greater supply issues, as your breasts operate on a supply and demand principle. But do what works for you.

The arching his back thing sounds like reflux. Does he spit up much? It's worth telling his pediatrician about. I know that more meds is not what you want, but reflux meds can really help if that's the problem.

Feel free to ignore all of the above, and just pay attention to the fact that your children sound wonderful and joyful, and it makes me smile to read about you playing with them. Have a wonderful day!

I ditto the reflux idea -- that's what my son did. Also, what about the drugs and their side effects -- do you see any correlation to the sleeping and/or eating issues that may be caused by the drugs? Just an idea.

LOVE the song -- so very sweet.

So THAT'S what it's called. "Neonatal teeth" Natalie (now 9 - HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?) got her first tooth at 2 months and it was a huge deal because apparently some babies are born with "tooth material" that could become dislodged and pose a choking hazard. We had to take her to a pediatric dentist who confirmed it was indeed a rooted tooth. At TWO MONTHS. Totally freaky.

So were Janie's teeth rooted?

When Janie was born, the two bottom teeth had already broken through the gums. You could see and feel the white tops. They were fully in about two weeks later.

She had to be checked out because a lot of times neonatal teeth have loose roots, so the baby could choke. Also, they are weaker and smaller since they didn't take as much time to develop. Sometimes they are removed because they are sharp and interfere with breastfeeding.

Janie's teeth were fine. She still has them, although they are noticably smaller than her other teeth. Because she was such a big baby, we joked that the teeth proved she was born to eat.

My baby had reflux. She is now 5 months and off the Zantac. It won't last a long time. If you don't want to give meds, then sit him upright for 1/2 hour after every feeding, or use the bjorn, and burp after every ounce. Tilt the crib so his head is angled, too.

I am definately not one of the "in" mothers, I raised my kids "old school". When my son started sucking on everything in site and acting like he was starving, I assumed that he was in fact starving.

So I started him off with rice cereal added to his bottle. Not alot, just like a spoonful in his bottle. It really seemed to settle his stomach and helped him rest better.

I know that is probably not what "they" say to do, but it worked for me, with my son and daughter. They are now 19 and 14.
